Stand up and Bless the Lord

You alone are the Lord; You have made heaven,The heaven of heavens, with all their host,The earth and everything on it, The seas and all that is in them,And You preserve them all.The host of heaven worships You. Nehemiah 9:6

Christian, your only purpose in this paradise lost and in the paradise found shall be praise. “Stand up and bless the Lord your God forever and ever!” (Neh 9:5).

This chapter presents numerous reasons why God is worthy of our praises, daily, forever. I will focus on the sixth verse, for it is profound in itself!

Many a mistaken soul thinks that faith has not its reasons. They think it is faith which has not reason to trust. But the Bible strongly disagrees. Listen to Nehemiah’s reasons why God must be praised:

1. ‘You alone are the Lord’. The universal uniqueness of God is worthy of our praise. ‘There is no one like the God of Jeshurun’, Moses remarks. Meditating on the excellencies of His majesty, in the beauty of holiness leaves our hearts satisfied and in tranquility, needing nothing else.

In other words, God is satisfying, even without anything else He offers apart from Himself. Many a man worships God for what He gives him. But those who find satisfaction in merely gazing at Him, merely beholding Him as in a mirror, merely sitting at His feet and listening, these are truly blessed.

His lips drip of honey. His gestures calm the raging hearts and even His silence speaks wisdom untold. Mary knew this, and Christ commended her. Nehemiah is simply saying, God has no equal, no competitor. He reigns supremely above all else. Will you choose to sit silently before His throne meditating on His excellencies, with the knowledge that He alone is the Lord?

Tomorrow I will look at the other reasons this verse gives us as to why God is worthy of all praises forevermore.
